Description

Giclée reproduction of “Windjammer: Clipper Ship” from the original oil painting by artist Scott Kennedy in 2000.

About this painting

During my younger years using oils (from 1965 to 1970), I had painted hundreds of windjammers. I had always been fascinated by the beautiful wooden windjammer, otherwise known as the “greyhound of the sea”.

The non-nautical term “windjammer” described any full-rigged square sailing vessel that had more than one mast. During its time, it was the fastest transport for taking goods and passengers across the oceans. The English tea clippers, for example, broke one speed record after another while sailing from China to England. During the gold rush, passengers booked windjammers from east coast ports to make haste for San Francisco.

The late 1800’s, however, brought a new wave of transport. Steamships began to economically outpace these greyhounds of the sea. The modern new steel-hulled steam vessels could keep a schedule regardless of the wind.

Cutty Sark, one of the greatest and fastest of windjammers ever built, now rests at the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, England. (Cutty Sark was actually a term used by the Scots for a scant undergarment that the witch, nicknamed Nannie Dee, wore in the poem Tam o’Shanter.)
