Description
Giclée reproduction of “Swift and Californian – Rendezvous” from the original oil painting by artist Scott Kennedy in 1994.
About the Swift and Californian
With my deep fondness for sail training programs, I joined these two great topsail schooners – both of which I am very familiar – in this cape setting.
In the foreground, Swift of Ipswich – currently owned by Los Angeles Maritime Institute (LAMI) – serves as a training vessel for at-risk youth. Built in 1938, she replicates an American privateer from the Revolutionary War.
Soon after Swift was built, she was sold to actor James Cagney and appeared in many Hollywood films.
The other tallship, Californian, launched from San Diego where she was built in 1984. Californian replicates a mid-19th century revenue cutter.
Launched in celebration of the 1984 LA Summer Olympics, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger later designated Californian as the official tallship of the State of California. She currently provides sail training and sea education programs up and down the coast of California.
