About the Outrigger Race to Catalina

Otherwise known as the “Super Bowl of Paddling”, the outrigger race to Catalina now draws over 100 teams from all over.

I had painted this piece in 1995 for the Princess of the Southern California Outrigger Racing Association (SCORA ), Corki Whitford Rawlings. The scene took place in Newport Harbor with the Coast Guard dock in the background.

The Newport Aquatic Center – NAC – which was founded by Billy Whitford (Corki’s son and my friend), often served to host the race.

This race first began back in 1959 when two outrigger canoes, built from Koa wood, were shipped from Hawaii to the mainland. A team of Hawaiian All Star paddlers competed with a team of paddlers from California. Duke Kahanamoku served as the Grand Master of the ceremony. The Hawaiian team won.

The Outrigger Race to Catalina became a tradition. Since then, the race has grown along with the sport of paddling. Every year in September, the race begins in Newport Harbor by the Coast Guard dock.

The women paddle across the channel to Catalina, and then the next day the men paddle back to Newport Harbor.

About Giclée

A Giclée is regarded as a museum-quality reproduction with its exceptional detail and color fidelity. Only name-brand, fade-resistant, archival-certified inks are applied to acid-free, archival quality substrates in order to produce the sharpest images possible.

Care for your Giclée print

On each Giclée print, we apply an archival coating designed to protect against UV light, scuffing, fingerprints and moisture. To ensure your fine art reproduction lasts a lifetime, avoid direct contact with the ink surface and do not position your print near direct sunlight or direct heating.
