About Inner Harbour painting
The Victoria Classic Boat Festival inspired my grouping of vessels in this painting of Inner Harbour in 1996.
The Maritime Museum of British Columbia sponsors the annual festival at the beginning of September. This festival hosts an enormous collection of classic boats and steam launches.
Known for its high tea at 3:00, the famed Empress Hotel fills the background. From Ship Point Wharf to all the way south along the embarcadero to the Parliament, the Inner Harbour is packed during the festival.
The two black schooners in the foreground (from left to right) are the Robertson II and the Pacific Swift. Both are owned and operated by the “SALTS” (Sail and Life Training Society) organization.
To the right of the black schooners sits the stern of the 133 foot wooden schooner Adventuress. A former arctic explorer, the Adventuress is a century old National Landmark Tallship currently operated by “Sound Experience” out of Port Townsend.
My ketch Svanen is situated furthest right in the painting. (I sold her to a sea captain from Victoria which helped bring my young daughter and me closer to the wonders of this fascinating harbor.)
I love to paint sailing ships that promote youth development. Powerful shipboard programs that provide life-changing experiences by teaching teamwork at sea are a part of my “world vision”.
