Description

Giclée reproduction of “Arrival! Wooden Boat Festival” from the original watercolor painting by artist Scott Kennedy in 1994.

About the painting “Arrival! Wooden Boat Festival”

During the Wooden Boat Festival, hundreds of wooden vessels of all shapes, sizes and colors appear in Port Townsend.  This annual Labor Day event, known as the “largest gathering of crazy romantics in the world”, a wealth of wooden boat knowledge and experience to Port Townsend.

I had been commissioned to create the poster for the Festival in 1993. Thus began my friendships with the characters of the community, the Wooden Boat Foundation and also the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding.

In the center of this painting, the 133-foot schooner Adventuress arrives. During the Wooden Boat Festival, this national historic landmark ship comes alongside the public dock used for boarding passengers.

The Adventuress offers a truly unique hands-on sailing experience through her Sound Experience program. Her location in Port Townsend provides ideal access to the magnificent waters of the San Juan Islands and is not far from the shores of the Olympic peninsula.

The historical and beautiful Victorian settlement of Port Townsend fills the background. Only a two hour drive from Seattle, the settlement is a century away with all that is old and majestic.

One time a bustling seaport and shipbuilding center, seventeen saloons and a dozen brothels thrived in Port Townsend during the boom days. But that was before the railroad was diverted to the (once) small town of Seattle.
