Description

Giclée reproduction of “Character Boat Parade” from the original pen and ink drawing by artist Scott Kennedy in 1983.

About this drawing

Since childhood, I have experienced a multitude of boating events. The Newport Harbor Character Boat Parade happened to be one of the wildest and most far-flung that I’ve ever known.

In 1983 – during one such late August parade – I climbed aboard the Sea Explorer tallship Argus to observe and take down some sketches. I composed this drawing to portray the mayhem and frivolity of this comic parade of characters.

As a boy, I met many Hollywood actors during these parades. Personas from McHale’s Navy and Gilligan’s Island participated in the parades. Other such notables included Bailey’s of Balboa, Buddy Ebsen and Sterling Holloway.

In this depiction, First Mate “Regie” blows off the ship’s cannon amongst the crowd of vessels, wind surfers, ferry crossings and an accidental ramming or two.
