About the painting
In this 1997 piece, I portrayed a maneuver at sea called “heaving to”. In this maneuver, the USS Constitution achieved a standstill in speed so that the crew could launch a long boat into the water.
The purpose of the launch was to relay information to the USS Enterprise as they prepared the squadron for an attack into Tripoli Harbor during the second battle of Tripoli.
Some history on this ship
The super frigate USS Constitution, one of six of its kind, was launched in 1797 for service in the young American navy.
In 1801, Thomas Jefferson ordered the USS Constitution, along with other ships, to patrol and to defend American trading vessels in the Mediterranean. North African Barbary pirates had been attacking and capturing ships.
During the War of 1812, the Constitution earned the nickname “Old Ironsides”. When fired upon by the British frigate HMS Guerriere, the cannonballs either bounced off or embedded themselves into the very hard “live oak” planking of the Constitution’s hull.
The battle was won after a third of the British frigate’s crew was killed or wounded. The HMS Guerriere was dismasted and left floundering. Before she burned and sank however, the Constitution’s crew boarded the Guerriere to remove her helm. The Constitution’s own helm had been destroyed by the incoming cannon fire.
Where is she now?
The USS Constitution is still commissioned as a US Navy ship based in Boston Harbor with some 60 officers and sailors participating in ceremonial and educational programs.
I have toured the ship several times as well as the USS Constitution Museum located ashore. On one tour, I witnessed the massive and highly skilled reconstruction of her hull in keeping her up to the standards of America’s most prized and historic ship.
