Description

Giclée reproduction of “Stag Bar” from the original watercolor painting by artist Scott Kennedy in 2002.

The original artwork was painted onsite in Newport Beach, California.

About the bar

The Stag Bar had stood its ground since opening in 1914, six years after the building was constructed. One of the oldest operating bars in Southern California, many a stranger quickly got to know its famous 100 foot-long wooden bar.

Typical for bars around a century ago, this establishment was known for card games and gambling. Its legend suggests that the hotel above the bar served as a brothel. The legend goes on to suggest that the Stag Bar also “cheated” its way through prohibition.

The bar still stands through its years of service. Some remember it as a cowboy bar in the 1930’s and 40’s. It recently underwent a complete renovation after a short stint as “The District Lounge” from 2006 to 2015.

Next door, the China Kitchen from the 1960’s and ‘70s was renovated to become the Italian restaurant “Il Farro”. Some remember the red vinyl door that connected the Stag Bar directly to the China Kitchen.

Next to that is another Newport constant, “Sid’s Blue Beet”, known for live entertainment and dining.

Painting the Stag Bar (as told by Scott Kennedy)

This scene from the historic Balboa peninsula at McFadden Place was painted onsite in 2002. I had painted and drawn several incarnations of this corner along with nearby Newport oceanfront haunts. While painting this scene, I felt fortunate while standing outside to be able to observe the colorful locals and watch their interesting interactions.
