About Sonderborg Wharf
We had made our way slowly south into the narrow waterway separating the Island of Als and the mainland Jutland in Denmark.
Once moored in this quiet port, we marveled at the quaint wharf and village setting. Here, we could easily walk into town or simply stroll the boardwalk.
Performing some necessary boat work led to an extended stay in this port. During this time, we met and quickly made many friends, including the area’s merchants.
Drawing and painting opportunities abounded, and the friendly atmosphere made it so inspiring. I was determined to display this atmosphere through my works.
The Danish have a word, “idyllisk”, that describes this idyllic and peaceful setting. Another Danish word, “hyggelig” – of which there is no English translation – denotes a warm friendly atmosphere. This place was truly “hyggelig”!
Sonderborg Wharf is very well-known to those who cruise the “Danish South Seas”. Many German sailors arrive to moor for the night before continuing their voyages north.
During the summer months, boats displaying a variety of country flags adorn this waterway. Nearly all tie up to buy supplies at the ships’ proviant, Hans P. Hansen, before venturing north towards the islands of Denmark, Norway and Sweden.
