Description

Giclée reproduction of “Schooner Pilot: Departure” from the original watercolor painting by artist Scott Kennedy in 1995.

About the painting

In this painting, the schooner Pilot  was moored up to the fish canneries wharf along Newport, Oregon’s Yaquina river in 1995.

I placed this scene within the context of fishing and how the vessels have changed during the last 100 years. The schooner Pilot  represents the old school fishing vessels from the early 20th century. Pilot  was designed and built along the lines of the renowned Gloucester fishing schooners. State of the art during the time, these elegant wooden fishing boats were used primarily off the Grand Banks.

The other vessel, a fishing trawler of the late 20th century, differs vastly in appearance.

This image was created aboard my boat while anchored on the river.
