About the painting “Reflections of Adventuress”
The genesis of this painting of Adventuress came about on one of my many outings.
My young daughter, Keeley, and I were on our way up to Victoria , BC. While near the shore of Roche Harbor, we decided to stop the truck and launch the canoe. We paddled and glided near the shoreline and then ventured amongst the moored boats.
I was suddenly struck by a sight that I would paint. The subject was an equal to its reflection, which picked up the ship’s essence. They seemed inseparable.
Not able to take this image down at the time, I made a sketch and – along with a photo – went to work on it back at my studio in Oregon.
Painting the water was one of the most challenging but rewarding efforts for me. I chose oil and canvas in order to properly convey the vibrant, glassy and serene mood.
This was my first experience with this grand wooden sailing yacht, Adventuress. She would become a subject in several of my paintings and drawings.
I later sailed her several times as crew and, along with my daughter, became guests of our good friend Bill Larsen, an extremely knowledgeable captain. Having never sailed a vessel such as this slender 113 foot gaff-rigged schooner, I found it exhilarating to feel her power in a good breeze.

Nancy Richardson –
Reflecting on the beauty of the ‘A’ brings fond memories of many years of sailing her with countless shipmates! Your painting will keep reminding me of ‘A’ adventures starting in 1972, as a leader of Mariner Girl Scouts from California; the 1978 Captain Cook Bicentennial Tall Ships events; being a mentor with ‘Girls at the Helm’ in recent years, and many more in between. Thank you, Scott, for capturing her quiet elegance…
