Description

Giclée reproduction of “Old Town Florence” from the original watercolor and Sumi-e ink painting by artist Scott Kennedy in 1992.

About the painting “Old Town Florence”

Travelling north on Highway 101 into historic Old Town Florence gives one a deep appreciation for both the scenic and historical aspects of the Oregon coast. The forest-lined road opens onto a wide river which then winds into sand dunes which spill into the Pacific Ocean.

My home was just up the coast from Old Town Florence, and I would make day trips down to paint this large watercolor piece. Sitting on a clearing on the south side of the Siuslaw River, I used a technique called Sumi-e – or Japanese ink painting – to set this image to paper.

I ground my ink on a stone and carefully mixed it with water. Applying the mixture to d’Arches water color paper with a minimal use of color, I was able to bring this piece to a near monochromatic completion.

An interesting part of this composition was the Bascule bridge. I had been an appreciator of Oregon’s art deco style bridges, especially this one with its unique tied arches. The bridge was built in 1936 and, like many bridges along the Oregon coast, was designed by Conde McCullough.

The historic Old Town Florence waterfront hosts many restaurants, bars and shops along with the Siuslaw Pioneer Museum. To the far right, you may recognize the popular and timeless Mo’s Seafood and Chowder sitting atop the pilings.

To the left and beyond the forest, you can make out “Cape Perpetua” on the horizon – so named by Captain James Cook. From the crest, which rises 800 feet above the sea, one can view over 70 miles of Oregon coastline and 37 miles out to sea…on a clear day.
