Giclée reproduction of “Hotel de Haro” from the original watercolor painting by artist Scott Kennedy in 1994.
Painting the Hotel de Haro
After a few visits to this beautiful natural cove in Roche Harbor, I had decided to capture the incredible scenery of the Victorian-style Hotel de Haro along with its gardens.
Situated with my easel and paper on the pier – and out of the way of foot traffic – I angled myself in order to encompass the entire landscape as well as part of the leading off pier.
Curious passersby stopped, looked and sometimes chatted to me about the history and beautiful essence of this place. This scene with the Hotel de Haro was located on the far west side of San Juan Island and faced the Island of Vancouver and also the city of Victoria some miles to the west.
Some commented to me that the Hotel was soon to be torn down. Noticing structural loss probably due to age and disrepair, I felt that I was creating a memory of this little paradise.
One day, a man who was watching me began a discussion. It turns out that he was one of the current owners – Rich Komen. He mentioned having plans to tear down the entire structure and build a new…something.
We had a lengthy discussion after which he returned and requested to buy the original of the painting. We also agreed and afterwards proceeded to create an edition of signed and numbered reproductions.
Not long after that, I learned that the owners, along with their general manager, Brent Snow, decided to keep and restore the area. They envisioned a village atmosphere inclusive of the harbor/marina, general store, hotel, small private airplane runway and the Victorian gardens which hosted some of the oldest imported plants to the Northwest.
