About this painting
This watercolor and ink painting of Avalon’s Green Pier began as a single painting focused on the middle of Avalon’s perfectly crescent-shaped natural harbor.
Once completed, I displayed the painting at my gallery in Newport Beach, the Scott Kennedy Maritime Art Gallery. Orders for reproductions immediately started rolling in.
The harbor master’s office and look-out, the green building, sits at the end of Green Pier. Below and in back of the harbor master’s building is fish and chips stand. The shore boats moored up in order to ferry sailors anchored in the harbor.
Other notable sites include one the Wrigley mansions in the upper center. Below and to the right on the hill side is the famous author Zane Grey’s former “Adobe” home. Below and along the water front is the famous Tuna Club.
Avalon’s Green Pier is also known as the pleasure pier to set it apart from the commercial pier. The commercial pier, which no longer exists, berthed the famous The Great White Steamer calling in from San Pedro.
As a teenager, my parents brought me along to Avalon to stay a few days during summertime. When the steamer sailed in, passengers near the bow would throw coins at us kids in the water. We would stuff these coins into our cheeks so we wouldn’t lose any while we dove for more.
With the idea to make this the center-piece of a three panel set (triptych), I returned to the Island to sit for the left side panel which included the Holly Hill House. Finally, late in 1987, I finished the right side panel which included the Catalina Casino.
