Description

Giclée reproduction of “Dory Fleet: Newport Beach” from the original watercolor painting by artist Scott Kennedy in 1999.

The original work was painted on location in Newport Beach, California, and is part of Scott Kennedy’s Newport Beach Artwork collection.

According to Scott Kennedy

The Dory Fleet at McFadden’s Wharf in Newport Beach is one of my favorite spots.

Upon approaching, the scent of the sea and the freshly caught fish mixed with the salt-seasoned wood and tar surrounds you. The sounds of crying, hungry gulls and the surf crashing onto the beach and pilings automatically fold you into a world of its own.

The beach by the Dory Fleet is relatively flat, so the boats run up on the shore by surfing in. Logs are then placed under the bows in order to push the dories onto the dry sand and into the waiting public.

This painting represents the last remaining beach-side fishing cooperative of its kind in the United States. It has been operating constantly since 1891. Every day, fishermen market their freshly caught fish and lobster from the beach directly to the public.

In 1969, the Newport Beach Historical Society recognized the Dory Fleet as a local historical landmark.

I set up my easel and stood on the beach with my watercolors and brushes for this piece in 1999.
