About the painting “Lee Shore at Terschelling”

Entering by way of the inner channel into the port of West Terschelling, we pushed our way over a sand bar. I wondered what would have happened if the tide had been any more slack.

Upon nearing the old village port, I was about to discover a world set apart from the mainland.

The island was the largest of the West Frisian Islands off Holland’s north seacoast. Forming a chain, these desert islands – loaded with sand dunes – have existed and thrived for centuries against the ravages brought by the brutal North Sea.

History seethes from the islands. The greatest of artists captured vessels toiling at sea through constant and unyielding northwestern prevailing winds.

I decided to paint the island’s most historic lee shore. My mood was set within the context of the painters of old, which was the style of the times during the 1600s to the 1800s.
