Description
Giclée reproduction of “Last Leg to Glory” from the original watercolor painting by artist Scott Kennedy in 1987.
About this scene
This “Last Leg to Glory” action scene was the final race of the 1987 America’s Cup. American challenger Stars and Stripes led by 1:58 seconds as the Australian contender Kookaburra III lagged behind. At this leeward mark, rounding the leg to the finish line effectively ended the challenge.
I was fortunate to be able to attend many of the practice sessions in Australia in 1987 and also off of Waikiki the year before. The San Diego-based team asked me to create works and this gave me opportune viewing from their main chase boat Betsy. While working on board, I could observe closely the synchronized crew and yachts as they merged with the high winds and seas.
